A2L Resources
What is an A2L Refrigerant?
• A2L refrigerants can be a single refrigerant or a blend of multiple refrigerants in specific amounts.
• A refrigerant with a lower flammability rating compared to A3 refrigerants (hydrocarbons, propane, isobutane)
• A refrigerant with a lower toxicity rating compared to B series refrigerants (such as ammonia)
• Many hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and their blends are classified as A2L.
• Many low-GWP alternatives to HFCs are class A2L.
• A2L refrigerants should only be used in new equipment that’s designed for their use.
• A2L refrigerants are considered the second safest class of refrigerants.
A2L Best Practices
- Always follow proper installation and service procedures
- Installation of jumper ducts or transfer grills to adjacent rooms can help increase room size for refrigerant concentration calculations
- Purge line sets before brazing
- Braze with nitrogen flowing
- Mark the total refrigerant charge on the required label and record refrigerant-related service work
- Always weigh in the refrigerant charge
- Ventilate work areas
- Ensure leak detection sensors are properly installed and operational (NEVER bypass a sensor)
- Stay educated and train your staff
